Springtime Scares: Horror Films to Look Out for in April 2025

April signals the return of Spring, but we horror fans know that fear has no off-season. and next month brings a host of new thrills in the form of supernatural nightmares, new takes on classic themes and post-apocalyptic survival.

I’ve put in the hard yards and researched the available information, making my these picks based on what looks the most spine-chilling, intriguing, or just plain fun. So, here are five horror films to look out for in April 2025 plus some honourable mentions that didn't quite make the list.

825 Forest Road

Chuck Wilson relocates to the town of Ashland Falls with his wife and sister, following a family tragedy. They soon discover that the town harbours a dark secret: a ghost that has terrorised residents for decades. To end the hauntings, Chuck must locate Helen's former home at 825 Forest Road before it's too late. With Stephen Cognetti, (Hell House LLC franchise) as writer/director, this looks like a chilling supernatural offering with an intriguing mystery to solve.

Scheduled for release on Shudder on the 4th of April.

Sinners
This highly anticipated release is directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) and is a moody and stylish reimagining of the vampire mythos offering a fresh take on the genre, promising a chilling and  thought-provoking experience. Set in the 1930s, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who return to their hometown, hoping to escape their troubled past - only to confront an even greater darkness that tests their will and survival. And what a tagline - "Dance with the devil, and he'll follow you home." This could be a candidate for the standout horror film of the year.

Scheduled for cinema release on the 18th of April.

Until Dawn

A year after her sister Melanie's unexplained disappearance, Clover and her friends set out for the remote valley where she was last seen, hoping to uncover the truth. Their search leads them to an abandoned visitor centre, where they find themselves hunted by a masked killer who takes them down one by one. However, they awaken back at the start, trapped in an endless time loop. with a new, even more terrifying killer at each reset. Their only chance of breaking free is to survive until dawn. I love a good time loop film and this looks like it could be a winner.

Scheduled for cinema release on the 25th of April.

Shadow of God

After the sudden and unexplained deaths of a number Vatican exorcists, Father Mason Harper returns to his childhood town while awaiting further instructions from the Church but, beneath the surface, the town harbours long-buried secrets. Believed to be dead, Harper's father Angus, suddenly reappears and Mason begins to believe he is possessed - not by a demon, but by something divine. His attempt to drive out the entity unleashes a terrifying chain reaction towards disaster of a biblical scale, challenging the very foundation of his faith. A possession film with a twist that could inject new life into the genre.

Scheduled for release on Shudder on the 11th of April.

Párvulos

A Mexican horror film with a narrative centring on three brothers who isolate themselves in a remote cabin following a devastating viral apocalypse. As they strive to survive in this desolate new world, they hide a dark secret in their basement - something they must feed to ensure their own survival. With a mix of whimsical fantasy and dark horror, this dystopian fantasy presents the aftermath of an apocalypse from the point of view of a teenager and his younger brothers in a coming of age story, where they battle adversity alone.

Scheduled for cinema release on the 4th of April.
